Monogamy, Schanogamy

[Try saying that twice in a hurry: “monogamy, schanogamy; monogamy, schanogamy”]

DID YOU KNOW that polygamy is supported by the Bible? Take a gander at these verses:

Exodus 21:10 "If [a man] marries another woman, he must not deprive the first one of her food, clothing and marital rights."

In 2 Samuel 5:13 "After he left Hebron, David took more concubines and wives in Jerusalem, and more sons and daughters were born to him."

In 1 Kings 11:3, King Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines: “He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives led him astray."

In 2 Chronicles 11:21, King Solomon's son Rehoboam had 18 wives and 60 concubines.

In Deuteronomy 21:15 "If a man has two wives, and he loves one but not the other, and both bear him sons...."

And in the New Testament, Jesus sanctifies all of the above by saying: "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law (the Old Testament) or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them." (Matthew 5:17-18)

After they kill abortion rights, d’ya suppose Christians will go after monogamy next?

As I pointed out before, God gave laws about divorce even though he hates divorce. There is nothing directly indicating that the same is true for polygamy, but I would not quickly dismiss the possibility.

"A very important point to remember is that not everything recorded in the Bible is approved in the Bible. Consider where polygamy originated — first in the line of the murderer Cain, not the godly line of Seth. The first recorded polygamist was the murderer Lamech (Gen. 4:23–24). Then Esau, who despised his birthright, also caused much grief to his parents by marrying two pagan wives (Gen. 26:34).

God also forbade the kings of Israel to be polygamous (Deut. 17:17). Look at the trouble when they disobeyed, including deadly sibling rivalry between David’s sons from his different wives; and Solomon’s hundreds of wives helped lead Solomon to idolatry (1 Kings 11:1–3). Also, Hannah, Samuel’s mother, was humiliated by her husband Elkanah’s other wife Peninnah (1 Sam. 1:1–7)."

I'm under the impression that the vast majority of Christians support monogamy but I don't know the statisics. I surely support it. I think that marrying someone else would be an unloving disservice to My Love. I want to pay full attention and affection to her. (*dreamy sigh*)

Plus I think that polygamy would really work against intimacy, and that seems wrong and undesirable to me.

oop, interruption, must stop typing for now =P

I just read an editorial about that in the liberal rant sheet ... err ... newspaper yesterday. It said that if the Constitution doesn't define marriage, then some states could make polygamy legal. One supposes the first state to line up for that would be Utah.

I have no problem with polygamy. If my husband wants a second wife, that's fine with me, as long as she sleeps in the garage and does all the laundry and stays the hell away from my goats.

You're missing the point, Paxton. Your *guidebook* is full of uglies which are not defined as ugly. Polygamy. War. Stoning people to death. Slavery. Etcetera.

Anne, yes, that's how I was moved to post on the topic. It's coming up in the context of gay marriage. Scare tactic? IN gay marrage you have two people who love and care for each other, and who can care for and love children. In polygamy you have what? A man and a bunch of women who want to send all females to the garage (but themselves, of course).

It's not a scare tactic at all - there are groups who actively advocate polygamy. I have no problem with polyamorous relationships between consenting adults. I have a big problem with child molestation masquerading as religion, and that's what is happening with the radical Mormon sects who practice polygamy. Girls in their early teens are forced into marriage with much older men - sometimes men married to the girl's own mother! It's disgusting.

You should have to be 18 to get a marriage license. If you can't enter a contract before then, you certainly shouldn't be making decisions about the rest of your life. I don't think parental permission should make a difference, either. A parent who would approve a child under 18 being married isn't someone who ought to be making decisions for that kid in the first place.

There is also a high incidence of welfare fraud in these Mormon arrangements. The father can't legally claim the families, so the mother claims to have been abandoned.

And want to talk about flies boys - the young men in those communities are driven out because the old men want the young girls to themselves. It's a horrible situation.
