  2. Dear Hannah,

Thanks for the offer, but neither I nor most readers here are Christian. What's more, most of us think Christianity has done the world a very great deal of harm.

    Athana,
I'm curious about the Goddess, but I have some questions that I'm not sure who to ask. I've been interested in neo-shamanism, eco-anarchism and the Gaia Hypothesis for a while.

How do you know the Goddess exists? What spiritual experiences have you had regarding her? And is there a way for someone else to have the same experience to find out for themselves? What makes you, and her other worshipers, believe in her in other words?

You seem to advocate a peaceful unorganized spirituality, but what of the many historical Goddess cults and religions, who were quite bloodthirsty and violent? I mean, say what you want about christians, but at least their namesake founder Jesus advocated a true pacifism (even if they don't bother to obey him).

Next, I'm bothered when I read of this hypothetical global prehistoric peaceful culture which honored nature, worshipped the Goddess and lived in harmony--because I can't seem to find any solid historical evidence for this, aside from a few figurines and such, as well as antiquities open to a lot of interpretation and speculation.

Finally, my question is one of thealogy. Do you think the Goddess' immanent presence equally interpenetrates the Earth (or universe), or is it stronger in some places like ley lines or power points for example? Why? Where and why do our souls come from, or is it just temporary energy granted to us by the Goddess which has to be given back and recycled, at which point, is the Goddess really omnipotent?

I apologize, for asking so many questions. If you think someone else would be better able to give the answers, please direct me to them (if it's a book though, I really can't afford anything from Amazon right now).

    Best regards,
    -Elazul

  4. Thanks, Elazul, for your questions.

I posted on Jan. 1, 2006, about one of the experiences I’ve had with the Goddess. To find out for yourself about Her I’d suggest joining a group based in Goddess spirituality. If that fails, go to the library and get Starhawk’s The Spiral Dance, Karen Tate’s Walking an Ancient Path, or Tim Ward’s Savage Breast: One Man’s Search for the Goddess.

As for violent goddesses, there’s no evidence that violent goddesses existed before the war gods created them. Before the first war gods appeared around 4000 BC, there’s no evidence goddesses were associated with either war or violence. Before 4000 BC, there are no images anywhere of goddesses in war gear. There are no images of goddesses engaged in acts of violence.

Jesus, who exists in a book crammed full of violence, said I come not to bring peace but a sword.

IMO, you’re “bothered” by the peaceful prehistoric Goddess cultures I talk about on this blog because you haven’t read the right books. Please read my book, Switching to Goddess. I use only the most highly regarded academic sources in the book. The reason I wrote Switching to Goddess is that I can’t present the necessary evidence in a blog post, or even in an entire weblog, made up as it is of disparate snapshots of information meant to be read in a hurry and in isolation from the rest of the postings.

Again: if you don’t want to buy books, go to your library. If they don’t have Switching to Goddess, ask them to order it or to borrow it from another library.

As for your thealogical questions, here’s the rub: much of Goddess thealogy was destroyed long ago by people who feared its incredible power. One person I know who seems to be part of a family line that goes back into the days before Goddess was destroyed in her area of the world is Z Budapest, from Hungary. It would be fun to explore your questions, though. Maybe I’ll do that in a future post (or two).

Some of the comments on here seem to miss the wood for the trees - Christianity has done more damage to the collective feminine spirit than anything I can think of - the patiarchs who manufactured most of the bible, rendered any feminine presence and contribution, invisible. Women get confused about labels: if you want to decide whether the cosmic bleuprint is female or male, plug in to energy. Everything boils down to energy. If you study energy enough, you will likely come to the conclusion that, indeed, the cosmic creative force is feminine. I am a medicine woman and shaman and have worked with energy for many years, (flowersoldier.com)
